TomTom Southern Africa App Reviews

This is a GREAT App

I waited for the South African version for months, but it was worth the wait. Have tested the app today without the cradle (must still find one of those), and it performed much better than expected.

Great value!

I just got the app with the cradle and tested it out on my Christmas holiday. Works great! Only one thing to complain about and that is that the map for Jeffreys Bay is completely outdated and needs updating badly!

iOS4

Nice app but very unstable since iOS4 upgrade.

Google search error

Great app except google search returns an error on iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPad... Patch it and Ill happily up my score!

HD Traffic

HD traffic would make this the perfect app. Spoke to Tomtom and they said they would look at implementing it should they get a big enough demand for it locally. Demand away :)

Brilliant navigation

If you want the best navigation forget Garmin, TomTom is much better on the iphone. Thanks for the iphone4 update, the new gfx looks brilliant.

Great app, needs better graphics.

great, but needs HD graphics.. Would be nice if the quality looked better.

Buyer Beware

Ive been waiting for this app to have live traffic for months. You buy live traffic as an In App purchase but it is very difficult to see the price. I finally found the price for the US version which is $19.99 per year. I was happy to pay that only to find that the price of Live Traffic for the SA app is $37.99. Not sure how they justify double the price? The app works fine once you have a GPS signal but my iPhone 3GS sometimes takes 10 minutes to get a signal.

Stay away from this one

When using this app in my car, it constantly complains of insufficient GPS reception. Only when I hold my device all the way to the front of the dashboard does it _sometimes_ have enough reception to take a stab at telling me where to go. Although Google Maps is able to give me pin point accuracy of where I am on the same device, I decided to test whether or not the phones GPS hardware was faulty, and installed the application on my (lovely) new iPad. Exactly the same problem Im afraid. Im sure that you understand that this is completely unusable as a GPS solution, and completely not what I was expecting.I would like to get a refund on this app, so that I can use another, more reliable GPS app. I am attempting to get a refund for this app, but Apple says I have to revert to Tomtom, lets see how that works out :/

Works Very Well

I just spent a month in South Africa (visiting from the U.S.). Part of my stay involved a road trip from Johannesburg to Plettenberg Bay on the Cape. Tom Tom Southern Africa proved to be a great help. The maps seemed accurate and up to date and the driving directions were spot on. It even got me though the tangled mess of motorways surrounding Joburg as I made my way from and back to the northern suburbs without any problems at all.

Overall good

Overall a good app, but certain key elements are a source of irritation. 3.5 stars The Route Demo functionality is absolutely useless as it seems to be more or less realtime - ie it takes 20 minutes to review a 20 minute planned route (Im sure its not actuall realtime but it is incredibly slow)!. In South Africa it is so important to have this functionality to check the route planned for you to ensure that you are not bein taken through any crime hotspots or no-go areas. There should be the ability to speed up the demo to check the areas one is being routed through. POIs are very comprehensive and it has most you woudl want to find. It also enables you to search country wide without knowing the exact suburb in which your address may be (a constant source of irritation with my wifes garmin. The other problem I have is that the battery of my 3GS runs out after use for about 4 hours, this is in spite of being in the cradle, ie it consumes poser faster than the cradle is able to charge the phone! This is alos a problem on long trips.

Its solid but should provide more

I havent found anything wrong with this app: it provides good directions with average graphics. The POI data base seems complete as well. However, for trip planning purposes it has limitations that reduce its value. You are limited to including only 5 waypoints for a planned trip and there is no convenient way to import a route from another gps application (even in TT format). For the price I would expect to see those features included.

The uber-best gps app ever!

This is such an awesome app it is mindblowingly brilliant! I absolutely love it and use it often! No gps or gps software comes close to it!

No Bluetooth Voice

I was extremely dissappointed to find that the voice navigation guidance does not come through on my bluetooth car kit, this renders the app rather useless, since most users, Im sure, will be using this app in their cars... Can this be remedied? Is it also possible to expand the map selection, eg, add neighbouring countries.

Fine for hand held operation

The app is ok. The iPhone car kit is unavailable and TomTom refuses ro advise when it will be available again. So your left driving with your iPhone in your hand or on the seat next to you. So if safety is not a concern then your good to go. You cant navigate by street name unless you enter a city (read "suburb") first. This can be quite troublesome if the suburb is wrong in an address youre trying to enter. Garmin lets you search by street. Other than that the app does perform well and has some nice features.

Incredible product

This is one of the best purchases I have ever made. Not just in the iStore, but anywhere. The app is extremely easy to use and works very well. I use it very regularly. Makes my old Garmin seem like it is from the dark ages. Had no joy whith my old iPhone 3G, but no problems with the iPhone 4.

An innovative GPS!

I use my Garmin eTrex for hiking, but when Im on the road nothing compares to the TomTom app. It is expensive, doubly so with the traffic add-on, but many times cheaper and more useful than a dedicated GPS unit. I cant imagine a GPS unit allowing me to report traffic cameras or navigate to a FourSquare location. TomTom have created something amazing here, and their constant improvements and innovation have made me a proud, paying customer.

Great South African navigation app

Having had Garmin GPSe for close to 8 years I compared their iOS app with this one of TomTom - this one beats it by far. After using this app in rush hour traffic in Joburg every day for the last week or so its been extremely accurate and the voice navigation sounds South African and the navigation instructions are structured, understandable sentences - does not sound like a computer voice. Reading reviews on iOS 6 and the new maps feature and voice navigation this app in my mind is still the way to go as the iOS 6 maps feature for SA seems not to work with voice navigation + youd have to use data. Cellular data is SA = expensive and theres little 3G outside the big cities. Overall, solid app with great performance! Money very well spent!!!

HANDSFREE KIT ARRIVED FOR iPHONE

Handsfree kit has arrived at retail for R1099. Search the net and you will find it. App is great, except HD traffic uses 3G and chews it! Just wish you can edit wrongly placed speed cameras on your routes as with normal GPS.

Fantastic Product

Nothing like iOS 6s maps, and well worth the pricey price tag!
