Pros and cons of TomTom Southern Africa app for iPhone and iPad

TomTom Southern Africa app good for

I waited for the South African version for months, but it was worth the wait. Have tested the app today without the cradle (must still find one of those), and it performed much better than expected.
I just got the app with the cradle and tested it out on my Christmas holiday. Works great! Only one thing to complain about and that is that the map for Jeffreys Bay is completely outdated and needs updating badly!
HD traffic would make this the perfect app. Spoke to Tomtom and they said they would look at implementing it should they get a big enough demand for it locally. Demand away :)
If you want the best navigation forget Garmin, TomTom is much better on the iphone. Thanks for the iphone4 update, the new gfx looks brilliant.
I just spent a month in South Africa (visiting from the U.S.). Part of my stay involved a road trip from Johannesburg to Plettenberg Bay on the Cape. Tom Tom Southern Africa proved to be a great help. The maps seemed accurate and up to date and the driving directions were spot on. It even got me though the tangled mess of motorways surrounding Joburg as I made my way from and back to the northern suburbs without any problems at all.
This is such an awesome app it is mindblowingly brilliant! I absolutely love it and use it often! No gps or gps software comes close to it!

Some bad moments

Great app except google search returns an error on iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPad... Patch it and Ill happily up my score!
Ive been waiting for this app to have live traffic for months. You buy live traffic as an In App purchase but it is very difficult to see the price. I finally found the price for the US version which is $19.99 per year. I was happy to pay that only to find that the price of Live Traffic for the SA app is $37.99. Not sure how they justify double the price? The app works fine once you have a GPS signal but my iPhone 3GS sometimes takes 10 minutes to get a signal.
When using this app in my car, it constantly complains of insufficient GPS reception. Only when I hold my device all the way to the front of the dashboard does it _sometimes_ have enough reception to take a stab at telling me where to go. Although Google Maps is able to give me pin point accuracy of where I am on the same device, I decided to test whether or not the phones GPS hardware was faulty, and installed the application on my (lovely) new iPad. Exactly the same problem Im afraid. Im sure that you understand that this is completely unusable as a GPS solution, and completely not what I was expecting.I would like to get a refund on this app, so that I can use another, more reliable GPS app. I am attempting to get a refund for this app, but Apple says I have to revert to Tomtom, lets see how that works out :/
The app is ok. The iPhone car kit is unavailable and TomTom refuses ro advise when it will be available again. So your left driving with your iPhone in your hand or on the seat next to you. So if safety is not a concern then your good to go. You cant navigate by street name unless you enter a city (read "suburb") first. This can be quite troublesome if the suburb is wrong in an address youre trying to enter. Garmin lets you search by street. Other than that the app does perform well and has some nice features.
Been using this app for about 2 years with the live traffic and its been great (past tense) but since the last couple of updates its been crashing regularly for no apparent reason. Was excellent but now its just unreliable!
Although this app has many of the features of a fully fledged GPS the startup time of the app (on an iPhone 5S) is sometimes upwards of a minute, and the new update seems to have made the app highly prone to crashing. User interface needs work, as well as making a global search for POIs. The ability to open shared locations from within other apps would be great too, as well as sharing locations needs work. For the price this app is not good value, although hopefully future updates will improve this.
